The Listener - CD Review - Raw Star Guitars

October 2004
By Nick Bollinger

The Dellburgoes have less chance of getting anything from their first album Raw Star Guitars aired much beyond the b.net. Hailing from the West Coast, their music sounds as saturated in smoke and booze as a carpet in a public bar. Stylistically, they skip the 70s and go straight back to the original garage rock of the 60s. Bo Diddley beats are set against searing trebly lead breaks that would be at home on an early Yardbirds record.

They make the most of a modest budget, turning crackly mics and boxy drum sounds into a virtue. The whole thing fizzes with furious energy and is more satisfying than plenty of albums with more technical bells and whistles.

RAW STAR GUITARS, the Dellburgoes (the Devil Made Me Do It).
